No warp, no rot and no splinters. That's right, this is all created using Concrete Technology of Hawaii's modified concrete systems. Its all custom textured and colored by hand. The wood look is available indoors and out. It can be applied with a rough texture or a smooth high gloss finish. With all the durability of our custom concrete systems and available in countless color combinations, the wood look is an exciting new addition to our line of applications.

What better way to show the transformation of dull, boring, grey concrete into a functional work of art, than some before and after photos. So for this blog post, I'm going to let the pictures do most of the talking.

For this particular project, we chose the wood look for the covered portion of the patio with varied board sizes and colors.  We also added a wood look accent around the border of the pool.  We thought it would be cool to make it look like a 4 x 12 plank was used for the coping.  The rest of the deck was completed using the stone classics system with sandstone, desert beige and dark grey with a random stone pattern.  You can find out more about the Stone Classics system in an earlier blog/update post here;

The roof over the patio and ohia posts were added, prior to our arrival. The concrete around the pillar anchors had to cure at minimum 3 weeks before we could apply our coatings. Once the roof renovation was completed, the slab was all ours.

As usual, our preparation is second to none. We fixed every crack we could find and added several saw control joints to alleviate tension in some of the larger sections of the slab. The cuts themselves are left exposed, but we were able to hide them along the grout lines for the most part. It is necessary to allow the individual slabs to move, expand and contract.

Standard strength concrete with an average 4 inch thickness should have a saw control joint every 10 feet maximum to minimize the occurrence of cracking. This of course is with the assumption that the site is properly compacted and reinforced with steel prior to pouring the concrete.

We usually recommend installing a vapor barrier on new concrete, even though its not required by code to do so on exterior concrete. This aids in preventing efflourescence due to hydrostatic pressure as well as providing a more consistent environment for the concrete to cure

Once the cracks are fixed and the slab is diced up, we can clean, mask and prepare the application. There were no coatings to grind off on this one, so we were able to simply acid wash and neutralize the surface prior to applying our coating. This preparation is sufficient enough to clean and open the pores of the concrete.

The coating itself is similar to the stone classics or acrylistain systems in that they are hand troweled, patterned and colored. More info about those systems can be found in the blog and updates as well as the picture galleries.

The total thickness is about that of a dime. So we don't change any elevations going into doorways or under the siding here. The surface also follows the contours of the original deck, allowing water to drain as intended.

The textures are created by hand. Each "board" is colored individually with typically 3 or more colors. We can create knots and life like grain. Like all of our products, the wood look is available in a vast array of colors. Custom colors are available along side our standard catalogue as well.

Concrete Technology of Hawaii's Reflective Floor System is a relatively new product in our line of floor coatings. Ideal for home, commercial and industrial interiors, this super fast curing epoxy coating is highly durable and absolutely stunning.

Utilizing our Rapid Armor (soon to be EZ Armor) epoxy, the Reflective Floor System achieves a smooth, high gloss finish with a beautiful 3 dimensional effect within. The pictures don't really do it justice, but I'll do my best to explain the product, some benefits, a little about the application process and show you a few examples along the way. Be sure to check out the video at the end of this post.

The Reflective Floor System is a combination of multiple reflective minerals, available in a number of different colors, suspended in a high build, high solid, clear epoxy sealer called EZ Armor. This two part Cyclo-Aliphatic amine epoxy sealer is a new product in our line which improves upon and replaces our Rapid Armor sealer which you see in the pictures. There are multiple techniques to installing a Reflective Floor which produce different aesthetic effects.

Preparation is much the same as in any of our applications. Concrete Technology of Hawaii grinds all interior concrete floors to profile, remove contaminants and generally open up the pores of the concrete surface. Clean, bare concrete is always the goal to maximize the bond of any product we install. This includes grinding edges and corners and everything in between. We use vacuum systems with all our grinders and we do collect most dust, though there is always some residual, especially when grinding edges or vertical surfaces.

Cracks are repaired in a number of ways depending on the severity of the fracture. You can find more information regarding concrete repair in some of my previous blogs, though I plan to go more in depth in a future post.

Typically for a Reflective Floor install we start with a coat of CTi's Enviro Prime clear epoxy floor primer. Enviro Prime is a two-component, 100% solids epoxy designed as a high performance self leveling industrial floor primer for concrete. Enviro Prime has a low viscosity that seals the concrete and provides a primer for the top coat. Its excellent as a clear, industrial grade, high gloss top coat itself, but we use it as a primer for the Reflective Floor System as well. We mix it, roll it or trowel it, then allow it to dry.

Enviro Prime cannot be applied to on-grade concrete slabs that do not have an under-slab vapor barrier or slabs that exhibit water vapor transmission or hydro-static pressure. Efflourescence is a sure sign of moisture permeating through the slab. I plan to go more in depth on this topic in a future post as well.

We usually let the Enviro Prime dry over night. Tack free is around 4 to 6 hours and clean foot traffic is after 8 hours. Full cure is 5 to 7 days for heavy traffic when using it as a top coat and it has an amber tint to it. For our purposes, it needs to be dry enough to sand the surface and over night is plenty for that. Enviro Prime dries hard and glossy, so by sanding, we rough up the surface for the following coat of Rapid Armor or EZ Armor to adhere properly.

First and foremost, Rapid Armor is super fast setting and even more so here in Hawaii where ambient temperature is on the higher side. I've spoken with dealers on the mainland, in cooler climates that heat up the product before mixing and applying. Here in Hawaii, we sometimes cool the product to increase work time. The new EZ Armor improves work time over the Rapid Armor. Both products however, are two liquid components mixed with the mineral color of choice. We offer 22 standard colors, ranging from multiple blues, silvers and greys to reds, golds and browns. I'll provide some links to color charts and other examples at the end of this post.

We mix a primary color and 1 or 2 highlight colors before application. This is where the artistry and customization come into play. Like I said before, there are a number of different techniques to mixing the colors once they're on the floor and I don't want to give away too many of our secrets, but in essence we're blending the colors in interesting ways. We do this with rollers, chemicals, veining and blowing air to create different effects. With the high build, the product self levels to a high gloss shine, which can be dulled if desired. The minerals are suspended and mixed in the EZ Armor to give the translucient 3D effect.

Dry time for light foot traffic on the EZ Armor is 14 to 18 hours and full cure for heavy traffic is 2 to 7 days depending on required use. This is a considerably longer cure time than the old Rapid Armor, which is full cure in 24 hours, but we get a lot more work time to blend colors and achieve a deeper, more customizable look with the EZ Armor. Both products provide excellent long term wear capabilities, chemical resistance, as well as resistance to abrasion, stain and hot tires, but EZ armor improves upon all these.

That's it. We peel the masking and go on our way. Wax can be used, which we also provide, for heavy traffic areas, but the main appeal thus far has been the quick turn around times. The Kona Brew Pub, in the pictures above, closes for only one day a year. We were able to do the preparation in the nights leading up to their one close day without interrupting their daytime business. The floor went down the night prior to closing. It cured for a day and had bar stools and full business traffic the next day.

This week we have Concrete Technology of Hawaii's Stone Classics System. This one is similar to the Acrylistain system in its application with some differences in the coloring techniques. We utilize the same materials as the previous 2 systems; Hallmark and Acrylistain, so once again you get all the benefits of our polymerized acrylic concrete coatings without the cost and headaches of actual stone. All of CTi's colors are available as well as custom colors so we can compliment some of the colors in and around the home or business or we can come up with something totally unique and custom. Twice the strength of standard concrete and resistant to UV, fade, chemicals and staining. This alternative to stone stands the test of time.

Starting with the demolition phase. This includes grinding off any existing coatings or contaminants, removing damaged areas of the slab, grinding open cracks or even chiseling out grooves to install steel staples. Every project is a little different. That is why we offer free estimates to get an on-site look at the specifics of every project.

Preparation is the next phase. This includes repairing of cracks or damagesd areas, cleaning; including pressure washing, acid washing and neutralizing. Masking is a big part of what we do as well. We always want our jobs to turn out clean and our impact on our customers surroundings to be minimal. It always boggles my mind to see the carelessness of some other contractors when it comes to simply masking off a project to minimize over-spraying and painting. Some paper, tape and a little bit of extra effort go a long way and we at Concrete Technology of Hawaii take a lot of pride (sometimes bordering on OCD) in making sure we don't make a mess.

Efflorescence is always a concern here in Hawaii. I will be going over this in depth in a future update and I've touched upon it in some of the previous posts as well, but efflorescence is essentially moisture migrating from under the concrete slab to the surface. Should we find evidence of moisture and/or hydrostatic pressure, we can address this in a few different ways, but long story short, we waterproof the slab and get ready for application.

At this point, everything should be repaired, clean and masked. It's application time. Much like the previous two systems (The Acrylistain System and The Hallmark System) we start with a skim coat of our polymerized acrylic concrete in any color we like. This coat ends up being the grout color for our pattern. While most of the time we employ a random stone pattern, we can do any pattern or border such as tile, slate, etc.

Once the skim coat has had some time to dry, it is rock mopped to smooth any rough edges, swept and blown clean. Now we can apply the pattern using filament tape in 3 available sizes (1/4, 1/2 and 3/4). Stencils are available as well, though most my customers and I prefer the customizability of doing it randomly by hand. This way we can make the stones any size and shape we like. I've even been asked to make a stone in the shape of the Big Island for example.

After the pattern tape gets laid out, we apply the texture coat. Again, we can use any color in the catalogue or even a custom made color, but by using a hand troweling technique, we can achieve a stone like texture. This is the same troweling technique utilized in the Acrylistain application. This coat must be allowed to dry before moving on. Once the texture coat is dried, we use a flat scraper to even out the texture and remove any sharp or loose points.

Once the texture coat is ready to go, then its time for the fun part. The color in this application is actually applied with sponges. We typically use 2-3 highlight colors in layers to achieve the tone we're looking for. We start by rubbing color into the low parts of the texture and finish by just hitting the high points in the texture with our final highlight color. The tape can be lifted before or after the coloring to expose the pattern.

Sealing phase is next. Just like our other systems, we have the same options available. Depending on the location and and amount of traffic, we can taylor fit a sealer option that is perfect for any project. We offer skid additives for extra traction or high gloss options for inside the home or business. Usually 2-3 coats of our clear industrial sealer is applied and allowed to dry. Low odor options are available for sensitivity to fumes as well. Clean foot traffic the next day. Furniture and vehicle traffic can return after 4-7 days depending on the sealer chosen.

Next up is the Acrylistain system. This is Concrete Technology of Hawaii's take on stained concrete, but taken to a higher level. Unlike lithochrome or acid staining, we're not staining the original grey concrete, nor does the slab need to be new or fresh to accept the color. We actually use our polymerized acrylic concrete as a canvas for staining. All of CTi's colors are available, as well as custom ordered colors.

The Acrylistain system is perfect in and around the house. We can provide a superior stained look on new or old concrete. Using the same materials as the Hallmark system, you get all the benefits including, but not limited to UV, fade and chemical resistance. You get more than double the strength of standard concrete and a sealed surface that protects your concrete against the elements and is much easier to maintain and clean. Much like the Hallmark system, we can incorporate patterns and borders as well.

As always, clean and bare concrete is the goal. Devoid of paint, grease, dirt or anything else that may interfere with the bond of our products. Cracks are repaired based on the severity of the crack. New cuts are made where necessary to alleviate tension and expansion/contraction. By the time we complete the demolition/preparation phase, the slab should more or less be like new.

With outdoor projects, we can acid wash and pressure wash. We use a 4 to 1 solution of muriatic acid and water. We pressure wash every inch of the area with over 4000 psi and neutralize the solution with sodium bicarbonate. Inside the home or business we always grind with vacuum assisted grinders to clean and open the pores in the surface of the slab. This maximizes our chance for a mechanical and chemical bond.

In instances of excess moisture or efflorescence, we may need to treat the slab with a waterproofing agent. In concrete slabs where moisture barriers have not been installed prior to pouring the slab and excess moisture occurs in the substrate, hydro-static pressure may cause efflorescence. Essentially, this is water from under the slab pushing the salts and chlorides to the surface. Water usually finds the path of least resistance, typically up cracks or joints, but this is the number one cause of delamination of coatings or tile or anything that requires a bond to the concrete.

So what do we do? A penetrating sealer applied by airless sprayer that forms a hydrogel membrane and effectively fills the matrix inside the slab. The added benefits are that this treatment also densifies the concrete and protects the embedded steel. This same stuff is used to seal swimming pool shells on upper floors of hotels and other high rises. It seems I may need a future blog on just efflorescence and how we treat it.

Now that things are cleaned and treated and masked, we are ready for application. We'll start with a thin skim coat of our polymerized acrylic concrete, mixed with our color of choice, much like our Hallmark application. An initial skim coat isn't always necessary if the concrete slab itself is in good condition and no pattern or borders are being installed. Should we decide to install a skim coat, we sand and sweep it once it has dried. Then patterns and borders can be laid out and masked.

Next or perhaps first, we trowel out the texture coat in typically a light shade of color. Either a light grey for cooler looking themes or a light beige or sandstone for warmer color schemes. We can put a lot of texture or a little depending on traction and or cleaning needs. This is all done by hand for a totally custom look.

Once the texture coat has dried completely (within minutes in direct sunlight), we give the job a scrape or possibly a rock-mop where needed. Time for color. We use the same acrylic that we mix into our other coatings and mix it with water this time. So, no acid or neutralizing. This is especially nice inside the house or business. The color is sprayed on in layers with pump sprayers until we achieve the desired results. As things dry, the darker colors seep into the lower parts of the texture and blend naturally. This color coat needs to dry overnight to evaporate as much moisture as possible.

Sealer time. A couple of different options here. Indoor or outdoor are considerations. Amount of traffic. High gloss or satin finishes. We have options for different tastes. The surface needs to be completely dry from the day before then 2 coats of clear industrial grade sealer are applied by roller. Glazes are also available for a glass like finish indoors.

Clean foot traffic is possible the next day. Furniture and vehicle traffic can return in 4 to 7 days depending on the sealer and environmental conditions. Depending on the amount of texture, the finished Acrylistain can be mopped clean. Outside, pressure washing is great. We recommend simple dish detergent for the toughest messes. Like the Hallmark system, Acrylistain is resistant to mildew, staining and most chemicals.

The Concrete Technology Hallmark System. This is probably our most popular application due to its beauty of course, durability and versatility. It can be applied to any existing concrete, new or old. It's great for outdoor use because we can achieve a few different texture options. We can leave it rough for steep driveways or sidewalks where extra traction is required or we can use a knockdown technique for a smoother surface, ideal for pool decks or other concrete surfaces in and around the home. It can also be applied to stairs and walls. I'll show some examples of both down below.

Like all of our systems, The Hallmark System is available in dozens of standard colors, but again we can also have colors custom ordered for a minimal additional cost. Patterns are available as well. From simple tile patterns or borders to custom hand-laid flagstone patterns. Logos and stencils can be incorporated as well. The design opportunities are limited only by the imagination.

So what is the Hallmark System? It's a multi layer system based on a polymerized acrylic modified concrete. Which in simplest terms means concrete mixed with liquid plastic. The total system is about the thickness of a dime and has a compression strength more than twice that of standard concrete. So its stronger than normal concrete and you're not changing any elevations to thresholds and baseboards. It is UV resistant, stain resistant, chemical resistant and even freeze/thaw resistant, though that is not much of a problem here in Hawaii. Outside it will cut the surface temperature by 20-40% depending on color.

To apply we always want to start with clean, bare concrete. Outdoor projects usually afford us the ability to acid etch and pressure wash. However, if previous coatings, paint or heavy mineral deposits are present, we grind all that off with vacuum assisted, diamond tipped grinders. Cracks are addressed on a case by case basis and repaired accordingly. I plan to describe in further detail the different methods of repairing cracks and some of the reasons they occur in a future blog post. Saw cuts may need to be added to alleviate tension and prevent future cracking.

Once the surface is cleaned and repaired, it's time to begin the application process. First coat is a trowelled on skim coat over the entire surface. This conceals repairs, inconsistencies in the concrete and acts as our grout color should we decide to add a pattern. We think of it as the canvas that all the magic happens on. We mix all the products on site. The color itself is integrated directly into the mix. After a short drying time, the skim coat is sanded smooth and swept clean.

Next we install the pattern using filament tape of varying widths and/or stencils. These are laid out by hand and masked off accordingly. Once the pattern is in place we apply the spray coat. This is shot from a hopper in layers of typically 2 to 3 colors. At this point we can use trowels while the coat is still wet to achieve the knockdown look or we can leave the spray with a raw texture. Texture can be manipulated by varying air pressures and the consistency of the mix.

Borders and highlights are masked and sprayed separately.

After this coat has completely dried, we remove the masking and peel the pattern tape to reveal the skim color below the spray-coat layer, becoming our grout lines. The surface is scraped, swept and blown clean again before receiving 2 to 3 coats of our clear acrylic sealer. Again, this stuff will stand up to vehicle traffic as well as the furniture and chemicals around the pool or home. Once sealed, it becomes a non-porous surface, so while mildew can form, it won't be able to root into the surface, making it much easier to clean.

Over the coming weeks, I plan to outline our different products here in this blog.

Seeing as we've started this year with a number of garages, I thought I'd begin this series with a few of them and our Durafleck 5000 product line.

We can apply any one of our different products to a garage floor, but I usually recommend the Durafleck 5000 system for its ease of cleaning, resistance to chemicals and obviously visually pleasing, granite-like appearance. Like many of our other products, it is great in other parts of the home and commercial areas as well. Kitchens, basements, hospitals and workshops can all benefit from this durable coating. Its available in about 30 different standard color combinations, but custom colors are available upon request as well.

Monk Seal Facility. Dark Grey Binder and Coal Chips.

The application always begins with clean bare concrete. Where we can't acid etch, we mechanically abraid with vacuum assisted grinders to not only remove any paint, grease or contaminants, but also to open up the pores in the surface of the concrete. This maximizes our potential for a mechanical as well as chemical bond with the existing concrete. Cracks can be fixed by a number of different methods, which I'll likely get into in another post. The repair typically coincides with the severity of the crack.

I should also mention that quite often, we find moisture along the seam where the garage and driveway meet. More often than not, contractors neglect to install a moisture barrier on exterior concrete. This creates a situation where moisture can migrate up to the surface, pushing the salts and chlorides with it. Fortunately we have a treatment for this, that creates a hydrogel membrane inside the slab and prevents the efflorescence. I'll go more into depth on this subject in a later update.

Once the area is cleaned and masked, the application goes down in 2 stages. Day one, we apply the binder and flakes. The binder is rolled out and the flakes are shot using compressed air to get an even distribution. The look is far more uniform than say broadcasting by hand. We allow this coat to cure over night. Day two, we sand and sweep the floor to remove any loose chips, then we apply 2 coats of industrial grade, clear urethane sealer. Once cured this stuff will stand up to gas, oil, paint thinner, MEK and many other common chemicals.

Clean foot traffic is allowed the next day. Furniture and vehicles can be placed in 4 to 5 days. Low odor sealer options are available as well. You can find more pictures of the fantastic Durafleck 5000 system and more in the "Our Work" section above or at our corporate website here
